What to Expect When Getting Porcelain Veneers

Do you ever cover your mouth when you laugh or smile with your lips closed? It’s hard to smile with confidence when you have a chipped, cracked, or discolored front tooth. That’s why we recommend scheduling an appointment with one of our cosmetic dentists in Shelby Township, MI. During your consultation, they’ll be able to determine if you’re a candidate for porcelain veneers.

Here’s what you can expect during the veneers process and how you can regain confidence with cosmetic dentistry.

Consultation With a Cosmetic Dentist

First, you’ll need to schedule a consultation with one of our dentists. During your appointment, they’ll examine your teeth, gums, and other oral structures. They may also take X-rays to take a look at any issues not visible to the naked eye. With this information, your dentist will be able to put together a personalized and comprehensive treatment plan so you can achieve the smile of your dreams.

You may be a candidate for dental veneers if you have a small chip, crack, or stain affecting a front tooth. Likewise, our dentists may also recommend veneers to close any small gaps between front teeth. Check out our blog post on the benefits of veneers to learn more.

Tooth Preparation

Compared to other procedures, such as dental crowns, veneers are minimally invasive. However, they do require us to remove a thin layer of enamel from the fronts of the teeth that will be receiving the veneers. This creates space so the veneers sit flush against your teeth and blend in with the rest of your smile.

Typically, we’ll inject a local anesthetic into the gums to numb the tooth we’re going to be working on during your appointment. This will ensure that you remain comfortable while we prepare your teeth for the veneers.

Once the enamel has been removed, we’ll take impressions of your teeth to send to the lab that will be making your veneers. Since it’ll take a few weeks for the lab to make your veneers, we’ll place temporary veneers over your teeth to protect them until you arrive for your next appointment with us.

Permanent Veneers Placement

When you arrive for your second appointment, your permanent veneers will be ready. One of our dentists will remove the temporary veneers from your teeth and replace them with the permanent ones.

Before bonding the new veneers to your teeth, they’ll make sure that everything is the right color, shade, and shape to match the rest of your smile. That way, you’ll be able to enjoy porcelain veneers that look and feel natural.

Once the dentist is satisfied with how the veneers sit on your teeth, they’ll prepare your teeth for bonding. They’ll do this by roughening the surface of your receiving teeth, then cementing the veneers in place. At this point, your dentist will check your bite and make any final adjustments to the fit.
